Company Mission & Vision
Grassroots India, a Section 8 not-for-profit Company, has the following primary objectives as outlined in its Memorandum of Association:
Our Response in Odisha
The Lived Realities of Women & Girls in Odisha
Odisha is one of India’s most culturally rich states, grounded in strong traditions, close family structures, and deep spiritual heritage. At the same time, many women and girls continue to face social and economic conditions that limit their ability to live with dignity, health, and independence. These challenges are especially pronounced in rural communities, where poverty, limited infrastructure, and long-standing social norms shape daily life and restrict opportunity.
Women and girl
s in Odisha often encounter violence, early and forced marriage, unequal access to education, and limited healthcare. Financial control and land ownership are typically reserved for male family members, while women’s mobility and exposure beyond the home remain constrained. After marriage, many women are expected to prioritize the needs of their in-laws’ households, frequently at the expense of their own well-being, autonomy, and aspirations. Over time, these pressures can erode confidence and agency.
The emotional consequences of such conditions are significant. Social stigma, silence around abuse, and intense family expectations contribute to isolation, depression, and a loss of hope. Women who experience domestic violence, sexual abuse, single motherhood, or abandonment often face severe hardship, with limited access to legal protection or supportive services. For those living in poverty, seeking help can sometimes lead to further marginalization rather than relief.
Gender inequality also affects families and communities as a whole. Boys and men often carry the burden of being sole income earners, responsible for supporting parents, wives, siblings, and children. Many migrate outside the region in search of work, resulting in prolonged family separation and emotional strain. These dynamics reinforce cycles of pressure and silence that affect all members of the household.
It is within these lived realities that Grassroots India has chosen to focus its work in Odisha. Our programs respond not only to material needs, but to the deeper human need for safety, voice, belonging, and self-worth. By creating spaces for education, skill development, health awareness, emotional support, and leadership, we seek to walk alongside women and girls as they strengthen their capacity to shape their own lives. This work reflects our belief that when women and girls are supported with dignity and care, transformation unfolds quietly but powerfully—within individuals, families, and communities.
